One night I dreamed a tax was levied on each animal we own. When I awoke, I realized that the real nightmare would be if we had not spayed or neutered each animal we own - and not just in case a tax was levied on them! Pet overpopulation affects everyone on our planet. Far more animals are born than have homes. There is an emotional, economic, and environmental toll to be paid. As a humane society, we should
be concerned with the emotional toll. We should be willing to
contribute time, energy, and available funds to promote spaying
and neutering companion animals. Success in this endeavor will
alleviate the economic and environmental burdens. Not all people meet these obligations, thus there are neglected and abused children and animals here in the wealthiest nation in the world. Animals seems to be way down the list. Too often the attitude is "I take care of mine, so you take care of yours," an attitude that punishes helpless innocents such as dumped animals or animals forced to fight. We must not allow this attitude to prevail! If you have spayed or neutered
your own pets, that is a step in the right direction. Can you
take another step by urging your parents, adult children, neighbors,
co-workers, and friends to spay or neuter their pets? Have you
offered a pet owner and that person's pet a ride to the vet?
